I like my Christmas trees to last until New Year’s Day, but Generation Y has decided to put up the tree for Thanksgiving dinner. Why? Who decided this? When did we decide to blur the two holidays into one? I get it. The times we live in are full of tension, and people need a release. Christmas is a great escape from reality. But that doesn’t do much for the wilting blue spruce.

OMG…I just had an epiphany: genetically modified Christmas trees that never lose their color, and the needles don’t fall off! Mental note to study dendrology, make millions on perfectly preserved pine trees, and unfortunately turn Mariah Carey into the ruler of the free world.

It could happen.

But for now, our tree is up, and in an effort to keep it green, we water it daily. But that doesn’t seem to work as well as I would like. I’ve tried adding sugar to the water and those little packets of preservative you get with roses, but still no use.

Next stop, the paint aisle at Home Depot. Nothing says ‘Happy Holidays’ better than a fresh coat of KRYLON.
